Coast cop punched, kicked, choked in roadside assault

POLICE have identified a man they are seeking over the violent assault of a Sunshine Coast motorcycle officer.

Police allege the sergeant was bashed by 45-year-old man Kevin De Vroom after an officer pulled him over in a van on Maleny-Montville Rd about 4.30pm on Friday, December 22.

In a statement, police said the man became hostile and punched and kicked the male sergeant in the head a number of times.

They said the 47-year-old officer used capsicum spray and a Taser but was unsuccessful in stopping the alleged assault.

Police said the man allegedly tried to choke the officer before stealing his helmet which had his police-issued body-worn camera attached.

Police said the man then fled in a white 2009 Toyota Hi-Ace van with Queensland registration 730WDZ.

The officer was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with facial injuries, but has since been discharged.

Anyone who may have seen Mr De Vroom or knows of his whereabouts is urged not to approach him but to contact police immediately.

Police would also like to appeal for anyone who may have witnessed the assault to contact Policelink on 131 444.

The Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Branch is investigating.
